REGISTRATION OF PROPOSALS FOR THEMED SYMPOSIUMS, ROUND TABLES AND MINI COURSES

WELCOME TO EIHC 2024

After being hosted in almost all capitals of the Northeast, the International Meeting of Colonial History, the EIHC, in an unprecedented initiative, is held for the first time at a university in the interior of the Amazon, the Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA).

The EIHC has been part of the academic agenda of Colonial History researchers since 2008, when it was held for the first time in Recife. A public success, the event continued to attract interested parties, proof that its format with Conferences, Round Tables, Thematic Symposiums, Short Courses and banner presentations, and the vigor of the discussions have contributed significantly to renewing debates about the past Ibero-American colonial.

We believe that it was due to the innovative character that its organizers have always lent to EIHC, that UFOPA, a young university founded in 2009, was selected to host such a prestigious event. The choice, which greatly honors us, is also a challenge for us. In the year 2024, our university turns 15 years old and we could not celebrate this moment by launching ourselves into another achievement by seeking to hold an event that promotes knowledge in the interior of the Amazon.

The theme chosen for this year's edition, , is quite timely. This theme seeks to promote debates about the centuries of colonial domination in different spatialities and the understanding of these processes in these societies. It is understood that landscape is the result of the dynamic and inseparable interaction between human groups and the environment over time. Thus, the landscape would be the territory resulting from human action over a space. In colonial reality, it would be the space resulting from the interaction between different indigenous groups and between them and European and African colonizers. It is understood that a landscape is not natural, but built historically, over time.

In the Modern Age, the mobility and displacement of men increased, enhanced by the maritime expansion of the 15th-16th centuries which, when confronted with the unknown, was faced with a new landscape that, for society at that time, was the result of providence divine, but which, over the centuries, began to be described increasingly in scientific terms. The invasion of the American continent by Europeans imposed new challenges on the men of the old world in their efforts to classify the populations they found there or which they forcibly removed from the African continent.

Modern man, motivated by different reasons, moved voluntarily or compulsorily, moving through different spaces, connecting and interacting with different practices and cultures. Thus, displacement is understood as the movement and travel, voluntary or not, of subjects, as well as the transport and circulation of goods, currencies, objects, natural genres, correspondence, animals and ideas between different parts of the modern world. These were journeys made by land and/or sea and connected distant and distinct spaces and societies. These are the questions that interest EIHC 2024.

With this proposal, the EIHC reinforces the collaboration it maintains with partners from European and North American universities and wants to reaffirm its commitment to further strengthening historiography with our Latin American neighbors as well as colleagues from African and Asian institutions, that is, with the Global South. This collaboration, we believe, only enriches the different intellectual traditions. Holding this event in the city of Santarém could not be more appropriate because, precisely at the Meeting of the waters of the Tapajós and Amazonas rivers, we want this natural phenomenon to also symbolize the meeting between researchers who keep the interest in the study of our colonial past so alive.

Therefore, we want all participants to feel welcomed with the brand of hospitality that is unique to them.
